Preparation and photoactivity of nanocrystalline TiO2 powders obtained by thermohydrolysis of TiOSO4
2013
Nanocrystalline TiO2 photocatalysts were synthesized in mild conditions by thermohydrolysis of TiOSO4 in water at 100 °C and post-calcination treatment at various temperatures. The TiO2 powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, specific surface area determinations, scanning electron microscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance measurements. The photoactivity of the samples was tested employing the photodegradation of 4-nitrophenol in liquid–solid regimen and the photooxidation of gaseous 2-propanol. The best results were obtained with the powder calcined at 600 °C for 10 h. Surprisingly, the not calcined sample was the most active for the abatement…

Preparation, Characterization and Photocatalytic Activity of TiO2 Impregnated with the Heteropolyacid H3PW12O40: Photo-assisted Degradation of 2-prop…
2009
Abstract Both commercial and home prepared TiO2 samples impregnated with tungstophosphoric acid (H3PW12O40) were prepared and used for the photo-assisted degradation of 2-propanol in gas–solid regime. The characterization results evidenced a good coverage of the polyoxometalate (POM) onto the surface of both types of TiO2 samples along with a marginal effect of the presence of ethanol or HCl during the POM impregnation step on the specific surface area, porosity, morphology, crystallinity and acidity of the samples. Propene was the main intermediate product found in 2-propanol photocatalytic degradation by using the samples containing POM as the photocatalyst, whereas propanone was mainly o…
Preface
2009
This Special Issue of Catalysis Today includes selected papers presented at the 5th European Conference on Solar Chemistry & Photocatalysis: Environmental Applications (SPEA 5). The conference, held from 4th to 8th October 2008, was organized by Leonardo Palmisano and Vincenzo Augugliaro in Palermo (Italy). The 252 delegates (representing 757 authors) who came from many different European and non-European countries delivered four plenary lectures and 49 oral presentations. To emphasise the poster presentation, the 184 posters were briefly introduced by the appropriate Session Chairman before each oral sessions began. Both oral and poster presentations were divided into the following five to…
Photocatalytic processes in membrane reactors
2017
Photocatalytic membrane reactors (PMRs) represent an interesting alternative technology useful both in the field of water and air purification and in organic syntheses. The necessity to develop chemical products and industrial processes that reduce or eliminate the use and the generation of toxic substances along with the risk for human health and for environment constitutes the aim of the research efforts based on the principles of green chemistry. Heterogeneous photocatalysis is a technology extensively studied for about three decades, since Fujishima and Honda1 discovered the photocatalytic splitting of water on TiO2 electrodes in 1972, which includes a large range of reactions. When a s…
Formation of high added value chemicals by photocatalytic treatment of biomass
2020
The depletion of fossil fuel requires the search for alternative renewable feedstock and environmentally friendly methods for the production of high value-added compounds and fuels. In this context, the efficient use of biomass has emerged as a significant research field as it represents an alternative green and renewable carbon source. Various technologies have been explored for this purpose and heterogeneous photocatalysis represents a valid alternative to the catalytic methods since it can be carried out under mild experimental conditions without the addition of harmful oxidizing agents. Different biomass components have been used as the starting materials, and many valuable chemicals h…
Facile preparation of CuBi2O4/TiO2 hetero-systems employed for simulated solar-light selective oxidation of 4-methoxybenzyl alcohol model compound
2023
The selective photocatalytic oxidation of organic substances is today considered one of the green techniques to synthesize important starting materials in different technological applications. This work reports an efficient, simple and cheap strategy for the synthesis of a new photocatalytic CuBi2O4-TiO2 (CBO/TiO2) heterosystem at room temperature. The prepared powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electrochemical measurements. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated by performing a probe reaction, namely the partial oxidation of 4-me…
Selective oxidation of phenol and benzoic acid in water via home-prepared TiO2 photocatalysts: Distribution of hydroxylation products
2012
Abstract The hydroxylation of phenol (a substrate containing an electron donor group) and of benzoic acid (a substrate containing an electron withdrawing group) has been carried out by the photocatalytic method in aqueous suspensions containing commercial or home prepared TiO2 samples. The aim of the work was to study the distribution of hydroxylation products when different photocatalysts were used and to correlate the selectivity to some physico-chemical features of the powders. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry, determination of crystalline phase percentage, specific surface area and zero charge point. The photoreactivity results indicate that the prod…
